Walkway construction in Oxnard CA - a path that stays level and sheds water

Cracked, heaved or puddled path to your door? We build concrete and paver walkways on a packed base so they stay even underfoot.

A gray paver patio with a central stone fire pit and curved seat wall opens onto a gravel walkway and landscaped slope.

What does it take to build a new walkway in Oxnard?

Walkway construction in Oxnard means laying a new path to your door, gate or yard, usually in poured concrete or interlocking pavers, set on a packed base so it stays flat and drains.

Most calls start with an old path that's cracked, heaved or holding puddles, or a dirt track worn across the lawn. I'll tell you straight that poured concrete costs less than pavers. If you go with pavers, we put in a real edge restraint, not thin plastic garden edging, so the path stays tight. The material, the length and width, and how much old path comes out move the price.

The schedule mostly turns on how long concrete needs to cure and on whether the path reaches the city sidewalk, because we check with the city about a permit before we dig there. You get a written quote that lists what's included. If you want the walkway to match a garden wall or stone steps, we also do brick wall installation and stone masonry.

What goes into building a walkway

Most of a walkway's life is decided before the first paver or pour, in the layout, the base underneath and where the water goes when it rains.

  • Layout and marked lines

We walk the planned route with you and stake it out before anyone digs, and the underground utility lines get marked first so nobody hits a pipe or wire.

  • A dug-out, packed base

For pavers, we dig out and compact the soil, spread and pack a base layer, then level the bedding sand before the pavers go down.

  • Slope so water runs off

Concrete guidelines call for a minimum slope for drainage, with the soil underneath draining out to open ground or into a drain line, so water doesn't sit on or under the path.

  • Clean work near the street

In Oxnard, storm drains carry runoff straight to the ocean untreated, so we keep the rinse water from concrete tools and loose base material out of the gutter.

Walkway questions we hear in Oxnard

How much does a concrete walkway cost per square foot in California?

A 4-inch concrete slab, installed with labor and materials, usually runs about $9 to $18 per square foot in California. That's the going market range, not our price, and pavers cost more than plain concrete. Your written quote lists what's included for your path.

When does Oxnard require an encroachment permit for a walkway?

Oxnard's encroachment permit rule applies before anyone digs in the public right-of-way, the strip the city owns along the street, or builds, changes or repairs a sidewalk, curb, gutter, driveway or other improvement there. Work in that strip is built to the city's own standard plans for public improvements. Rules for the rest of your lot can differ, so we check with the city before work starts, tell you what we find, and handle the paperwork and inspections if a permit is needed.

How long does new concrete take to cure before we can walk on it?

One concrete industry group's guidelines say a new concrete sidewalk can open to traffic after 7 days of curing. So plan on 7 days before the new walkway takes regular use.

What is the best way to keep walkway pavers from shifting?

A solid edge restraint along both sides keeps pavers locked tight. A paver industry group says flat metal or plastic landscape edging isn't acceptable for paver walkways because it lacks the side support, and it advises against timber, which warps and eventually rots. Ask each bidder what edge restraint their price includes.

Should I seal a new concrete walkway, and when?

You can, but not right away. The same concrete guidelines say a penetrating sealer can go on 30 days after the concrete is placed, and it typically needs reapplying every three to five years. If you want it, I'll put it on the quote as its own line.

Do I need a licensed contractor to build a walkway in California?

For most walkways, yes. California lets someone do minor work without a contractor license only when the job is $1,000 or less, needs no permit and the worker employs no one. A walkway built by a crew, or one that needs a right-of-way permit, falls outside that exemption.

Why Oxnard homeowners call Blockworks Oxnard Concrete and Masonry for walkways

We're based in Oxnard and work in many of the cities around it, and you can count on a straight answer about what your walkway needs and what it doesn't.

  • The owner writes your quote

I come out and write the estimate myself, and our crew builds it under a lead mason while I check in.

  • Only the path you need

If part of your old walkway is sound, I'll tell you to keep it rather than quote tearing it out.

  • In business since 2013

I learned brick, block and stone on crews and started this business in 2013, so we're 13 years in.

  • Fully licensed and insured

That counts on a walkway, since California's small-job exemption doesn't cover a hired crew or permitted work.

  • Your satisfaction, guaranteed

We want the finished walkway to match what the quote said, and that's the standard I hold our crew to.

Every walkway is planned around your house, how you use the path and whether it touches the city sidewalk, so nothing gets built until you've seen it in writing.
